I think its a very fair deal and at 22 gives Ceci some control too. Arbitration rights and an ability to make more $$ as the market evolves while he's so young. I think Dorion has done well in his first summer with the team.
Young or not, this group has seen lots, what it takes to make the playoffs and how .500 hockey before Christmas leaves you on the outside looking in. I've got bigger expectations this year with a "presumably" better special teams unit alone. My only hinge is MacArthur. Love the guy but if he goes down after a handful of games we are a top 6 guy short again. Wish him all the best but also hoped he'd lace them up at the end of last year to know one way or another if his career is over. Now we wait and see!!

I am kind of going with the assumption that Mac will either be:
1. out by November
or
2. a shell of himself
Mac played some hard-nosed style of hockey. He never shied away from the physical stuff. I just don't see a guy who missed a full year due to head trauma, being the same type of gritty player.
I know it's a negative thing to say, but I would say the odds are squarely against him playing all year and if so, being effective. Most guys that miss an extended period of time like that end up retiring shortly after.
All that said, I wouldn't say our top 6 hinges on him. Smith filled in admirably last season and I think he could do the same again. I really don't think last season was an aberration. He finally got a chance to play with someone other the Chris Neil (and whatever other garbage, like Colin Greening was on that line) and he showed he can play. |

I thought the most interesting part of the Dorion post signing interview was his emphasis on the idea that the Sens and Ceci could begin negotiations in 10 months on a new long term deal. I think he has a plan. |

The Sens have Phaneuf signed until 2020-21 and both Karlsson and Methot are signed until the end of the 2018-19 season. That leaves the bottom pairing this year with only Borowiecki, Wideman, Kostka and Claesson with any NHL experience barring injuries. I think they still need one wily veteran for any possibility of reaching the playoffs. That is why I'd love to see them bring in a local guy like Dan Boyle on a one year contract. It's not like they don't have the $$.
Karlsson - Methot
Phaneuf - Ceci
Borowiecki - (147 games) - Wideman - (64 games)
I'm not so sure any of these three will be legitimate NHL Dmen.
Kostka 15 games
Claesson - 16 games
Sieloff - 1 game
Keep in AHL for atleast one year
Chabot - Wikstrand - Englund |

Mac's heath & production are concerns. Can he be an above average 2nd line NHL LW ? I doubt it. I'm hoping he plays 70 games this season tallying ~15G ~22A.
I'm hoping Perron will be our second line LW in 2 seasons. |

GO SENS GO!!! - Go_Sens_Go Share very similar sentiments. I think if MacArthur goes down, Smith, Lazar, and longshot Puempel could jump up. I think Lazar is a guy that can turn into a solid top 6 forward that accents offensive players; much like Dustin Brown. Problem is (if I had to put $ on it) his offensive numbers will never be consistent (3 straight 50 point seasons would be a dream). Signing him to a long term deal at a fair cap hit - 7 years @3.2M?

He has a very cool and confident way of doing deals. I wish everyone sleeps on the Sens because I am pretty confident in the coaching staff more so the players. But even the players - TONS of guys to prove something this year. |

I'm concerned if any of the top 4 guys goes down for a stretch - more so than a top 6F........ we got tons of offensive from our defense. Maybe most in NHL potentially |

Don't think we'll be seeing Wikstrand for at least 3 years since he jumped ship and signed a 3 year deal over in Sweden.
Chabot is going to be a top 4 NHL D man someday. Sens will need him after they loose Methot to Vegas draft. |

At the beginning of last season my 2 x-factors for the Sens were 1 forward and 1 D-man: Mika Zibanejad and Jared Cowen.
Goaltending and Special teams are always x-factors but in terms of roster I like to think of a couple guys
There's MANY to pick this season. Matt Puempel And Curtis Lazar are both 1st rounders that have yet to produce in the NHL and could have break out seasons. Puempel is a long shot but Lazar has a lot of promise; IF he can use his body and start playing with an edge.
But this season my x-factors are: Clarke MacArthur/Bobby Ryan + Dion Phanuef
I can put money that if healthy for 82 games Hoffman will score 25 goals. Stone, Turris - 23+ goals and 60 points range. I can also bet Karlsson will score about a point per game, off by 3-5 points. But what MacArthur, Ryan, and Phanuef bring in terms of goals, points, +/-, and impact on the team is very variable to me. I think for Ryan and Phanuef you can atleast expect decent 2nd liners. BUT.... if they can somehow refine their games and grow as leaders...... this team could be a very strong team in the east. The Sens already have 4 solid forwards and 3 solid D-men without these pieces. Even Smith and Pageau bring solid 2-way abilities with a chance at 20+ goals. If these 3 guys play close to their contracts, then this team is in the playoffs and I'll bet money they have home ice advantage. Otherwise, I think this team will compete for a playoff spot.
who are yours? |

I agree with ryan. Ottawa finally has a LH center for him to play with (hopefully the coach will actually put them together) so hopefully that will help his goal scoring.
on D I'd have to choose Ceci. he just got a decent raise on a bridge deal. now is the time for him to step up and prove that he's a legit top 4 dman....if he can do that the sens are in good shape moving forward.
my third is craig Anderson. he's getting up there in age and injuries seem to be becoming an issue with him. I personally don't think Hammond is a capable NHL goalie, so if andy can't stay healthy and play well this year Ottawa is in big trouble.

I wonder if it would be possible to get Ryan Spooner out of Boston for Zack Smith+. I know Smith had 25 goals but I highly doubt he'll repeat it.
But there's two connections I like with Spooner. One, where's he born? you guessed it, Kanata. In addition to being a local guy, he also played with the Petes & Matt Puempel - including his rookie season - when Puempel was named OHL rookie of the year. Putting him with Pageau could make for a solid 3rd line.
Hoffman - Brassard - Ryan
MacArthur - Turris - Stone
Puempel - Pageau - Spooner
Paul - Lazar - Neil |

1st p: fingers crossed*
2nd p: agree.
3rd p: agree........maybe they can grab Bishop back in UFA if Tampa can't afford to keep him. I am fully confident Melynk will throw 6 years @6M |

I wonder if tampa would do a bishop for Anderson ++ (player and pick) trade. gives them a solid vet, at a significantly reduced price, to split time with vacilevsky (no idea how to spell that).
maybe something like
Anderson, smith, 2018 1st
for
bishop

not that I'm advocating this deal, but I would think that it would be a straight up deal.
TB would be getting a goalie under contract for a UFA goalie that they cant resign. |

yes....but there is a pretty big difference in age and quality of the goaltenders. bishop is probably a top 5, easily a top 10 goalie in the league...he's under 30. Anderson is neither of those things.
Ottawa would absolutely need to add to that deal IMO |

We know that most of our core players are going to come to camp improved from last season - big questions this season
Is the Hoff going to be able to play top 6 minutes of 2-way hockey? Can he be at least a 50-50 guy when it comes to both sides of the puck?
Is it possible for Ryan to improve or does he only have the gears and attitude that we have seen? Is there anything more there or is this a player that has hit his peak and can't do anymore. I have my opinions, but let's give him a chance.
Andy should be fine, but is he going to be in top condition like he was 3 years ago hen he was one of the NHL's best, or is age taking its toll? I say this is his best ever NHL seasons stats wise, and hopefully his bald head is ready for 16W come spring
Overall speed? We have a pretty yuck team, but can they move fast? Can they do what Pitt did last year and find a system that makes them the fastest puck moving team in the NHL? Ottawa has all the tools be the fastest puck moving team in their division, but are the scoring wingers able to play within that system? Stone yes, Hoff and Ryan I have my doubts.
Now it all comes down to how fast can we go? We can be as fast as any team, but will we be? |

you have concerns that Hoffman, one of the fastest skaters in the entire nhl, will have a hard time playing within a fast paced puck moving system?
if anything, stone is the one I'd be concerned about in that situation because of his weaker skating.
that being said, I think their ability to transition rather than their ability to skate really fast, will be more important in boucher's system. |

I'm not talking about skating fast, I'm talking about moving the puck. Having the IQ to move the puck instead of skating into a corner and losing it like Hoff does 10 times a game. Chicago Isn't a particularly fast team (Seabrooke, Hjammerson, Shaw, Ladd) but they move the puck as fast as any team.
Ryan is another guy who is an amazing passer, but can he play fast? Can Ryan even play within a system or is he like Heatley where he just does his thing and if he isn't doing that thing he isn't doing anything?
Skating speed is not a worry on this team, we have fast Centers. Playing a fast system is my worry, that's why they traded Zibby - not smart enough to play a fast moving system.
I had a post where peeps where knocking me for saying Zibby wasn't a natural Centers, that's what I meant. He can't play fast. He can skate and shoot fast, just can't receive and pass pucks at the speed of top NHL centers |

I know it's pre-season but I still don't like it when we agree. The only time we are allowed to agree is when we win the Cup in June. And by agree, I mean agree how hung over we are. |
